Romney trumps the President – in Utah
Utahns ready to back hometown senator for the White House
PHOENIX (March 28, 2019) – The GOP base voters around the country stick like glue to President Donald Trump — everywhere it seems except Utah.
Sen. Mitt Romney bests the 46th president in a hypothetical primary matchup, according to a new OHPI poll. Romney leads Trump 55–37 in the poll.
"Republican base voters around the country back President Trump survey after survey," said Mike Noble, Chief of Research at OH Predictive Insights. "But Beehive State voters buck that trend, giving the state's junior senator a wide margin of victory in a matchup."
Romney's support runs deep among Republican primary voters, especially self-identified somewhat conservative voters — Romney wins those 56–34. Trump does better in one category: very conservative voters favor Trump 52–41. Romney's strongest anchor is members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he holds a nearly 2-to-1 advantage over Trump.
"Just seven years ago, Romney won a bitter primary battle to carry the mantle for the GOP but lost to President Obama. If he wants to take on President Trump in a primary, he can count on Utahns to have his back," Noble said.
Methodology: Blended poll — 76% online, 24% live caller. Completed March 15–27, 2019. Likely Republican-only Utah statewide voter sample. 275 completed surveys, MoE ±5.91%.
Numbers may not total 100% due to rounding.
