POLL: Sen. Gallego Well-Positioned for 2030 Reelection — But 2026 Watch on Gov Race

Sen. Gallego Well-Positioned for 2030 Reelection — Approval Rises to 54%

Senator's Approval Up 2 Points Since August 2025; Water, Veterans Work Driving Positive Reviews

PHOENIX (May 7th, 2026) – Arizona U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego's job approval has risen to 54% in the latest AZPOP survey from OH Predictive Insights, up 2 points from 52% in August 2025. Thirty-three percent of Arizona registered voters disapprove of his performance, while 13% have no opinion. With his seat not on the ballot until 2030, Gallego is in a comfortable position to focus his political capital on the competitive 2026 gubernatorial contest and down-ballot races that will shape Arizona's political landscape for the next decade.

Sen. Gallego Job Approval — May 2026

The senator's improving numbers reflect a series of legislative accomplishments in 2025 and early 2026. Gallego secured $850 million in federal funding for Arizona water infrastructure as part of a bipartisan Water Security Act — a high-profile achievement that has generated positive coverage across the state's media market and directly addresses voters' top-ranked policy concern. He has also successfully championed expanded veterans' healthcare access in rural Arizona, consistent with his campaign's emphasis on constituent services.

Among Independent voters — the most politically consequential demographic in Arizona — Gallego now holds a 52% approval rating with only 28% disapproval. This Independent approval score is the highest recorded for any Arizona federal official in AZPOP's tracking history, exceeding even the peak Independent approval ratings of former Sen. John McCain.

"Gallego has cultivated a genuinely bipartisan reputation on the issues that matter most to Arizona — water, veterans, and the economy," says OHPI Chief of Research Mike Noble. "His approval with Independents at 52% reflects a senator who is governing for the whole state, not just his base."

Gallego Approval Trend 2025–2026

The senator's strategic positioning in 2026 is focused not on his own reelection but on Arizona's gubernatorial race, where he has endorsed no candidate but has campaigned extensively for Democratic turnout infrastructure. Democrats view Arizona's 2026 gubernatorial contest as a critical test of whether the state's purple-state status can translate into continued Democratic executive control, and Gallego is seen as a key resource for Democratic organizing efforts.

Among Republicans, Gallego now holds a 28% approval rating — up from 22% in August 2025 and notably above the typical Democratic senator's Republican approval in a polarized environment. The 28% Republican approval largely corresponds to voters who supported Gallego in 2024 and who credit his work on water and veterans issues with concrete results.

On the question of what issues Arizonans most want Gallego to prioritize in Washington, water infrastructure tops the list (cited by 38%), followed by healthcare costs (29%), border security (22%), and economic development (11%).
