Arizona Voters Broadly Support AI Regulation — Worry About Jobs and Privacy

71% Back Some Form of AI Oversight; Job Displacement and Privacy Top Concerns

PHOENIX (June 19th, 2025) – Arizona voters have formed clear opinions about artificial intelligence, with 71% supporting some form of government oversight of AI technologies, according to a new AZPOP survey from OH Predictive Insights. Only 9% say no regulation is needed, while 20% prefer industry self-regulation without government involvement.

Arizona AI Regulation Support

The survey reflects the rapid emergence of AI as a mainstream political and economic issue. Arizona's growing technology sector — anchored by semiconductor manufacturing, data centers, and a burgeoning AI startup ecosystem — makes the state particularly attuned to both the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence.

Top concerns driving support for AI regulation: job displacement (cited by 44% of pro-regulation voters), data privacy and surveillance (38%), AI-generated misinformation and deepfakes (31%), and algorithmic bias in healthcare or financial services (19%). Notably, concerns about job displacement are highest among workers in manufacturing, transportation, and administrative services — sectors with high AI automation exposure.

On specific policies, strong bipartisan consensus emerges around targeted measures. Requiring disclosure when AI-generated content is used in political advertising earns 84% support — the highest of any tested policy. Data privacy protections for information used to train AI systems draw 78% support. Requiring companies to disclose when AI systems are used in hiring and firing decisions gets 74% support.

"The AI disclosure and transparency requirements are polling like apple pie in Arizona," says OHPI Chief of Research Mike Noble. "Voters want to know when they're interacting with AI and when AI is making decisions about them. That's a reasonable, broadly popular position."

AI Policy Support by Party

Partisan divides emerge around heavier regulatory approaches: a federal agency dedicated to AI oversight draws 56% Democratic support but only 38% Republican support. However, the specific targeted policies listed above all clear 70% support across party lines.

Arizona's legislature has introduced several AI-related bills in recent sessions, including disclosure requirements for AI-generated political content (passed in 2024) and a study committee on AI's economic impact. The survey findings suggest strong voter appetite for more comprehensive action.
