POLL: Arizonans Still High on Marijuana Legalization
50% of Arizonans support legalizing marijuana for adult use
PHOENIX (Sept 3rd, 2019) – Three years after Arizona voters rejected legalizing recreational marijuana, a majority of Arizonans are now supporting the effort, according to a survey conducted by OH Predictive Insights (OHPI). The statewide poll of likely 2020 General Election voters supported legalization by a 50 to 40 margin.
"The results indicate that Arizonans are feeling more comfortable with Marijuana Legalization than before," says Eileen Liao, senior data analyst at OH Predictive Insights, "However, it still faces resistance from the same demographic groups of Republicans, women, and older voters."
Republicans remain solidly against the legalization effort but Democrats and Independents are more likely to approve of the effort. Support for legalization falls far short of the 60 percent threshold most initiatives hope to have as the campaign begins.
Furthermore, in May, residents of Maricopa County had the highest percentage of support for marijuana legalization. However, the latest data shows that the supporting rate among respondents in Maricopa County dropped 8-points from 52% to 44%, facing a tie of 44-44 margin. In contrast, support in Pima County and rural regions have raised significantly by 8 and 9 points respectively.
"It is a long way until November 2020 but backers of the marijuana initiative should be concerned just 50 percent of voters approve of legalization," said Mike Noble, chief of research at OH Predictive Insights.
Methodology: This blended poll was conducted via live caller and IVR. The survey was completed by OH Predictive Insights on August 13, 2019, and August 14, 2019, from an Arizona likely 2020 General Election voter sample. The sample demographics accurately reflected party affiliation, gender, region, and age. The sample size was 600 completed surveys, with an MoE of ± 4%.
